TREES ARE THE ANSWER

Our farming partners grow their coffee alongside an abundance of native trees and shrubs; this produces beautiful coffees and provides a necessary habitat.

AGROFORESTRY

Agroforestry is a crucial tool in fighting climate change, promoting biodiversity, and producing beautiful coffees. In the wild, coffee thrives amongst a rich variety of native trees. We support farmers who seek to mimic, and learn from, these natural systems.

SOIL HEALTH

Fallen leaves help maintain healthy soil by offering natural aeration, nutrients, and retaining moisture. Shade, moisture, and organic matter help convert the plant materials into nutrients available for plant growth. Cover cropping creates a fertile environment for worms and soil microbes. Shade trees, such as the Inga and Poro, convert nitrogen from the air into a biologically available form of nitrogen in the soil.(World Coffee Research)

HEALTH OF COMMUNITIES

A resilient agroforestry system removes the need for chemical pesticides or fungicides, improving farmworker health and eliminating the harmful effects of contaminated water runoff. Trees play a crucial role in water retention and erosion prevention.

BIODIVERSITY

Trees provide precious habitat for migratory birds, pollinators, native reptiles, mammals, and other plant species such as orchids and bromeliads. Each layer of shade trees has distinct microclimatic attributes, providing a home to pest predators such as birds, bats, ladybugs, spiders, and lizards. (World Coffee Research)

FOOD SECURITY

Agroforestry systems provide diverse income sources, specifically from honey production and fruit trees.

CARBON SEQUESTRATION

Trees absorb glorious amounts of C02 and protect arabica coffee plants by reducing temperature volatility. Agroforestry farms can store a significant amount of carbon, with values as high as 69.5 tons/hectare. (World Coffee Research)

ORGANIC FERTILIZERS

The outer fruit layer from the coffee cherry is used to make organic fertilizers, which builds soil tilth and reduces the need to truck in petroleum-based fertilizers from afar.
